Employee Highlight: Project Manager – Danny Moore

Our Employee Highlight today features Project Manager, Danny Moore. Danny has been a part of the Excellance Sales Team for a couple of months, and we decided it was a great time to ask him about his experiences this far.

First off, tell us a little bit about yourself and what you did previous to Excellance.

DANNY MOORE: I grew up on a small farm in north Alabama where I continue to reside with my beautiful wife (Erin), step-daughter (Maggie), and four boys (Levi, Griffin, Hayden, John Luke). I played multiple sports in my youth and continued to play football until my late 20’s. After I graduated High School, I attended college and joined the Electrical Engineering program while minoring in Applied Science where I received my medic license that allowed me to pay my way through school. After college, I worked for a local aerospace engineering firm for a short period of time, but I knew that it wasn’t for me. It didn’t take long to realize that my true passion in life was helping others. In 2005, I went back to work on the ambulance at Marshall Medical EMS and never looked back.

How did you come to work at Excellance?

DANNY: After 14 years of working in EMS, Fire, and Police departments you learn through firsthand experience the difference between a quality product and a mass produced product. Out of our entire Marshall Medical fleet, only one ambulance was an Excellance unit. It was the oldest by far (20+ years), yet still it was the most preferred ambulance with every crew member even over the brand new units of a different brand. With that experience, coming to work at Excellance was a no-brainer.

What do you like most about your position?

DANNY: I really like the fact that I still feel connected to the EMS community and have the satisfaction of knowing I can continue to make a difference by helping those that help others.

How is Excellance different than any other company you have worked for?

DANNY: From the bottom to the top, our upper management respects and appreciates each and every employee, customer and dealer. No matter the title of the person we are all considered family and that is hard, if not impossible, to find anywhere else.

Name three things on your bucket list and why you chose them.

DANNY: I don’t really have a bucket list, per say, but watching my children succeed, traveling the world, and growing old with my family would definitely be at the top of my list.

You eat at Madison Pizza a lot. Is it safe to say your favorite food is pizza?

DANNY: There’s not a favorite food, but I do have these kicks where I crave one thing more than everything else, but that changes every few weeks or so.

Where do you hope to be in 5 years? 10?

DANNY: With as many children as I have, you just have to hope and pray to make it through the next 10 years without being institutionalized. (laughter) But I would like to see myself with a bigger role within the ranks of the Excellance company.

What do you like to do outside of work?

DANNY: Anything football; from coaching at the local schools, watching Auburn at the field or on TV, all the way to playing in a backyard pickup game. I like watching movies, traveling, kayaking, fishing, hunting, riding ATV’s… basically anything outside, extreme, or just spending time with my family.

If you could meet any person in the world (from any time period), who would it be and why?

DANNY: I would have to say Marcus Luttrell, author of the best seller, “Lone Survivor”. In June 2005, Marcus received the “Navy Cross” and “Purple Heart” for his actions during Operation Red Wing and against all odds, survived unimaginable injuries and conditions while trapped behind enemy lines. It would be an honor to shake his hand and tell him thank you.

When preparing for a disaster, what are the top five things that any household should have on hand and why?

DANNY: First and foremost I believe that a detailed plan with built in contingencies is paramount in preparing for any disaster. This ensures that everyone in your household is on the same page and knows exactly what to do.

Also:

  • A pre packed bug out bag with season appropriate clothing and several days’ worth of nonperishable food and water.
  • Some form of wireless communication, whether it is a cell phone or UHF/VHF radio that allows you to signal for help or just to contact others.
  • A very reliable and fully charged flashlight.
  • And some sort of multi-tool or survival knife to hopefully aid in self rescue.

Employee Highlight: Production Manager – Scott Frazier

Our Employee Highlight today features Production Manager, Scott Frazier. Scott has been with Excellance for 24 years and we decided it was a great time to ask him about his life experiences so far.

First off tell us a little bit about yourself.

SCOTT FRAZIER: I am originally from eastern Kentucky, in the Appalachian Mountains. I have been in the foothills here though for 35+ years, so I am mostly Alabama native now. However, I do have bluegrass in me. I have one daughter, aged 25 and one granddaughter, aged 3. I love to laugh and make others laugh as well!

How did you come to work at Excellance and what do you like most about your job?

SCOTT: I came to Excellance at age 19 on the referral of the Electrical Designer at the time, Loren Kirkbride. I had been friends with his son for many years and he thought I would be able to learn the job, even though I had no experience at the time. The part I like most about my job is the same as many others here. That is the feeling of helping the front-line life savers. It is a feeling of pride that we play a small part in the big picture of saving the life of a family’s loved ones.

If you could trade places with anyone in the world for a day—who would it be and why?

SCOTT: This is a tough one! I think I would chose Pope Francis. I would love to have access to the vast and well-guarded historical records of the Vatican. Plus, that hat and the Pope mobile? Come on, that would be fun!

What do you like to do in your spare time?

SCOTT: First and foremost is spending time with my darling granddaughter, she is such a joy! My personal hobbies include camping, boating, playing guitar, and poker.

If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life—what would it be?

SCOTT: Another tough one as I so enjoy foods and trying new things. If forced to eat one thing, I am going to have to go with Pot Roast. I get my proteins and veggies and it is delicious!

Why don’t you believe in Santa?

SCOTT: Because I have never seen any scientific proof of his existence! Additionally, I never got anything I asked that guy for!

“Them’s fighting words.” -Santa

Department Profile: Rush University Medical Center

The Rush University Medical Center stroke program is one of the few in the country to offer a mobile stroke treatment unit as a part of its emergency medical services. This year Rush will join Excellence Inc. at the International Stroke Conference 2017 where the RUSH mobile stroke treatment unit will make its debut. On display will be the unit’s state-of-the-art features, including the ability to diagnose patients for a stroke on-site with an onboard CT scanner.

Rush University Medical Center’s stroke program was one of the first in Chicago to receive comprehensive certification from the Joint Commission. As the number one emergency neuro-transfer program in Chicago, the amount and variety of strokes treated by Rush providers have made the program #1 in the Chicago market and #11 nationally. To learn more about Rush’s initiative, we spoke with neurologist Dr. James Conners about the program and how Mobile Stroke Treatment Units are changing the world of healthcare.

Excellance: How many patients on average do you treat at the Rush Stroke Center and which of these patients are at the most risk for having a stroke?

Dr. Conners: We treat over 1000 stroke patients a year at Rush. The patients at highest risk are those with vascular risk factors including high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, smoking, sedentary lifestyle and heart disease. That said, anyone could have a stroke and therefore, everyone should be aware of the signs and symptoms of a stroke and what to do if one is suspected.

Excellance: What would you say are the best ways to prevent a stroke?

Dr. Conners: The best way to prevent a stroke is to know what your individual risk factors are and get them under control. These typically include things like hypertension, hyperlipidemia, diabetes, smoking and a sedentary lifestyle. For many patients, though, a stroke can be due to unforeseen causes in otherwise healthy individuals. This is also why it is so important to be aware of any signs and symptoms of a stroke and to call 911 if you experience any of those. With rapid treatment we work to minimize the effects of a stroke.

Excellance: When did Rush University first consider adding a Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit to their program? Can you tell us about that process and what the major reasons were for adding a MSTU to the program?

Dr. Conners: We have enthusiastically followed the development of mobile stroke treatment units starting in Europe for many years. But we were not able to truly consider our own program until we received a generous grant from the Grainger Foundation. As a comprehensive stroke center and a leader in stroke care, we felt the need to be one of the pioneers and help develop this new paradigm in stroke management for our community.

Excellance: What is the end goal for using a Mobile Stroke Treatment Unit at Rush?

Dr. Conners: With our mobile stroke treatment unit, we will be using the most advanced technology available to increase the odds that our patients will have a good outcome after suffering a stroke. We will be able to see our patients as fast as possible after their symptom onset, treat them and start them on the road to recovery. The faster that we can accomplish that, the more likely it is that they will walk out of the hospital and make it home with little to no disability.

Excellance: How well do you think the market will grow to accept Mobile Stroke Treatment Units? Do you think they are here to stay?

Dr. Conners: Mobile stroke treatment units have proven effective in reducing onset to treatment times, which translates to better outcomes. As we continue to build our stroke systems of care, I believe mobile stroke treatment units will play an increasingly significant role in both early treatment, as well as the most appropriate triage of patients to get them to the care they need.
